Necessity is the Mother of Invention...

...and maybe desperation is the Mother of Education?  Maybe...  M has her routine down lately - after our morning walk to school she will have a snack - then turn on "her channel" around 10:00 and watch a cartoon or two.  For those not in "the know" about "her channel" it is KBYU, which switches to religious devotionals at 11:00...  as wonderful as these are - they hold little interest for our M and she insists on something different.

There are two PBS channels that we can get here... Channel 11 is "her channel" and 7 is acceptable, but not at that particular hour because... well, frankly I don't know why - so she insists on turning on channel 30... V me... completely in Spanish.  Cartoons yes, but in Spanish.  Now - you must understand that although I do speak Spanish it has been a long time since I have considered myself fluent... and I haven't spoken it to my kids except when teaching them words like "quiet" or "enough"... watching these shows is a good stretch for my vocabulary - so I will sit and watch with her BUT she does not want translation - she laughs in all the right spots (that's probably the goofy looks on the faces) and fully enjoys herself.

and 1/2 an hour later she is off begging to play with A, or making a royal mess of her room... or both...

So there you have it - my admission that I let my daughter watch 1 1/2 hours of TV!  I like to pretend that there is some educational content even when she doesn't understand a word they're saying!

No guilt. Just tell people she takes Spanish lessons every morning. Maybe her thoughts are bilingual? You should get her tested....

You know, I let Brigitta watch a lot more TV when she was younger than I would have admitted. But I do think it's tougher when you only have one at home. They don't have anyone else to entertain them. So, no guilt... easier said than done, right?

I'll be back to check out more soon!

and today - all her channels are out of commission, so we're off to occupy our morning with real parenting... and shopping :)

Shhhhh. My kids watch WAY more than that.

And guess what! We live in the same state! We must bond!

Thanks for your comment on my blog this morning! I hope you do join us for Photo Story Friday this week. Its such a fun way to get a few more readers on the weekends!

I do have one kid that might learn something from watching tv. Olivia actually talks back to Dora and SuperWhy! Hopefully "abre" is sinking in.

haha... that reminds me that when T & W were little they would talk back to Blues Clues - telling him all the wrong answers... little boogers!

Hey, immersion is the way to learn a language. I think you're going to have one smart hijita.

Dan likes Dora even if it's on the Spanish station and therefore doesn't contain much English. He can still point out the backpack and the map. I won't be confessing how many hours the television might be on here for Dan. He hands me the remote first thing in the morning and is offended if I suggest breakfast first. I can win that one though. I do remember the word "no" now and then.

hi, over from SITS. My girls love Dora, and often use the spanish words while generally talking. I had to explain to the kindy teacher that she throws a bit of spanish in. I tried putting Bear in the BB House on in spanish, but the different voice weirded us all out, so not a good experiement
