In H.S. I was a ball of stress - so much so that I developed an ulcer and my doctor insisted that I go easy on my stomach... which meant no mexican food (gasp!), no caffeinated beverages ('meh - who needs to be AWAKE for seminary?), and NO chocolate!!!! (double and triple gasp!)
The next day - the choir began a fundraiser selling chocolate bars for $1 each... I almost cried... I spent 4 class periods in the fine arts wing of the building and was subjected to the smell of chocolate the entire time... my clothes smelled like chocolate every day... and I couldn't have any...
After about 2 weeks - I just couldn't STAND the smell of chocolate - I still can't...
Which is why yesterday when I had to bake a chocolate cake for a friends' son I went down to the basement and opened windows - asking my children to listen for the timer and call me when it went off...
Ummm - did you know it's really hard to hear the kitchen timer when you're outside playing catch? I do now...
So, I scrap that cake (well, the kids ate most of it... but it wasn't really worthy of someone ELSE's family) and after pack meeting and book club I make a run to the grocery store for some chocolate cake mix. If anyone has the audacity to suggest I should be doing homemade for this they're going to get my virtual foot up their blog-side.
In the end - it all turned out okay...
I used my favorite scrapbook technique (paper piecing) - stolen from the quilting world (applique) - which I like to refer to by "Scraplique"... so what is it called when you do it with fondant?
Lazy.
cut hey, if lazy gets the job done, trust me to figure it out!

ABsolutely adorable! I wish I would get sick when I smell chocolate (sort of . . )
That cake is amazing! You are very talented.
Being the investigative detective I am, I think there is something missing from that chocolate story. How could you be repulsed by chocolate only because you couldn't have any? I thought forbidden fruit was most desirable? Was there a binge-purge event during that time that you didn't talk about?
The cake is way cool. How much food coloring did it take to get a color like that?
:) So glad you guys liked the cake - the secret to nice bright colors is Gel Food Coloring - I'm a Wilton fan myself... the liquid stuff just leaves the colors too muted...
And I didn't leave out a single binge-purge event... sorry to disappoint :) Apparently some forbidden fruit is okay forbidden... now if someone told me I couldn't have caramel... I'd probably curl into a fetal position and refuse to leave my bedroom!
OMGOSH! I can't believe you made a cute dinosaur scrapbook cake. Are there photos in the middle?
And I can't believe you don't love the smell of chocolate. Can I be YOU! How cool that you trained yourself to hate something so divine.
And sorry about the psych. My new post is up so you can still be first.
Holy cow! That's an awesome cake. And seriously, I wish I could catch the "not liking chocoalte disease." Even after going off it for 46 days (this is my 3rd year doing it) I still crave it like there's no tomorrow.
Those choir people are just plain mean - torturing you like that. (I can't stand even looking at a cream puff because I once had to eat six of them in ten minutes for a play. A play that ran for two weeks. Which meant I ate a lot of cream puffs. A lifetime's supply, I'd say.)
So CUTE!!!
I have never worked with fondant. But, you did a beautiful job!
Visiting from SITS :)
I just it is a blessing and a curse. Don't worry I'll pick up your slack. What are blog friends for?
(I do not eat meat so you can have my share :D)
That is something I will always remember about you...You always make the cutest cakes. I still remember the Veggie Tale cake a few years ago.
I hadn't heard the reason behind the chocolate aversion before....very interesting physiological/psychological reaction. I wonder what Freud would make of it?
So sad you can't even enjoy the aroma of chocolate. That's kindof how I am with vegetables.
"Freud would be fascinated... but Freud is dead - and that just leaves the rest of us"
sorry - that's one of my favorite quotes :) thanks for reminding me of it Megz :)
you need to read the chocolate touch... you could relate to main character.
The only chocolate I really love is chocolate CAKE. Mmmm!
The cake turned out great!
That is ADORABLE!!!!
I must admit that I LOVE CHocolate.... Your cake is really cool, I'm impressed. I have to go to walmart and buy one :-)
Such a cute cake! Love the "scraplique"! You are quite a talent. Wish I lived closer so I could win one of those pretty cakes!
Lazy? You make this OMG beyond believable cake with a scarpbook technique lazy? Sheesh girl, this cake is absolutely adorable and very creative. I've never thought about using scrapbook pattern for decorating cake, of course, I can't decorate a cake, period. Every birthdays in our home, my 17 yr old daughter is the one who make the cake AND decorate it.
****sighs****now I wish I live close to you so I can have you design and make all my cakes. You are incredibly talented.
