Getting in the Spirit - of Contention

I'll have you know I wrote this wonderfully long post last night - and then scrapped it all this morning after realizing that nobody really wants to hear about the lady at the choir concert last night... the one who was in danger of a throat punch a'la Shelle style...

Who cares if she was uber-rude and I ended up with a picture of her kids backside instead of a picture of my darling smiling daughter.  In the end I can brush it all off and think generous thoughts.  I can think about what a great view of the concert her kid now had...  because before he was having to view it from front row ground level and now he could enjoy it from front row my face level.  See, I'm good at this generous thought thing.

Right...

So what is it with this "spirit of the season" thing anyway?  I mean... shouldn't we ALWAYS think wonderful thoughts about our fellow man?  shouldn't we ALWAYS want to lift people up instead of punch them in their throats?

I mean... I wouldn't have felt nearly as guilty about wanting to take her down back in August right?  August is a FINE time to want to maim your fellow man right?

But now I'm supposed to think wonderful thoughts about people who crowd the front row (even though they're a full foot and a half taller than the folks behind them)

Ahhh... 'tis the season for being a doormat...
you like?  it's at cocomatsnmore.com
okay, so maybe being kind is not really akin to being a doormat...  but sometimes it FEELS that way when you'd much rather punch them in the throat than smile and walk away.

No really, so someone needs to tell me... is it possible to get into the "spirit of the season" when all of the little events (concerts/recitals/parties/etc...) are just causing more stress?  At what point do I lock my family inside and force them to drink hot apple cider and sing O Christmas Tree at the top of their lungs?

really... I know... it's not my own photo (I'm hoping they don't mind so much since I told you where to find the doormat, there are LOTS of funny ones there!) but really... the only other option I had was to share with you the backside photo I got at the concert. You're very welcome.

I need to get that doormat for my Mom. She's too nice to people. Well, just some people.

It always makes me laugh when we talk about the spirit of the season. "Don't worry, folks! Come January you can go back to being mean to everyone!"

I felt the exact same way until I read President Uchtdorf's talk "Of Things That Matter Most" from last conference. Made me start thinking how much stress is overrated, and how much we do that we really don't HAFta do, you know what I mean? It's all about perspective!

(Of course, if your perspective is a view from underneath someone's foot, then I think it's time to switch gears a little.... :)

I have no idea. I definitely have more tolerance, but I get more annoyed too!

I tend to get more annoyed. Meybe it is because we are all so stressed out about buying 50 million people presents. I am really trying to keep it simple this year which also is hard!

When I read the title of your blog, I thought you had been at my house last night as we were putting up the Christmas tree. More fighting going on than at a hockey game. I wish I could answer your question, but with 5 of the 6 members of my family having birthdays this month, and all the holiday stuff I just want to lock myself in the bathroom till Jan. Good Luck!

I can honestly say I've never wanted to punch anyone in the throat. But maybe I've wanted to pinch that sweet spot under their arms....
I hate feeling bitter at concerts about the people blocking my view. Maybe you need to be one of those people who arrives 2 hours in advance to secure your front row spot....you can get all your reading done while you wait!

Sorry about the broken guitar, the flu, and the bad view at the concert. I'm glad at least some enjoyment was had out of all of those sad events as we read about them on your blog. Happy Christmas Season:)

Lock the doors now, just tell everyone you have the flu :) It will make for a much nicer holiday season:) I totally try to limit obligations this time of year--it is okay to say no!

Yes, seeing the backside of someone's head all night would bug me too.
Geez. Ugh.
Tis the season to get throat punched I guess.

Note to self: Remind me to NEVER ever sit in front of you at your kids concert. lol....

Love ya T.

LOL! You are correct! It is the Season to be "nice" and allow people to walk all over you! BUT, come January 1st...

You bring up some really great points but the short answer is no - no it is not possible to be in the Christmas spirit with all the garbage that goes down. But maybe you have too high of expectations? Maybe just look for one or two moments during the season?

There may be some need for some meds for you.
Maybe you should have throat punched her though......I'd have been able to see you on the news.

LOL! That's a good question. Tomorrow. Lock them up tomorrow.

I've got to put that doormat on my Christmas list.

Yeah, I'm struggling with feelings of non benevolence, too. Even my sister turned into a grade A doofus, just in time for Thanksgiving. Took away my peace for the holiday season, and I can't imagine how I'll get it back in time to be jolly and such. I'll search for it in the department stores, though. In my section.
